Editorial Ethics & Code of Conduct

Last Updated: August 30, 2026

Our Commitment

Indonesia Hap is committed to responsible, accurate, independent, and ethical journalism.

As an English-language news website focused on Indonesia, we recognize our responsibility to provide readers with information that is credible, fair, transparent, and presented with appropriate context.

Our editorial decisions are guided by the principles outlined in this Editorial Ethics & Code of Conduct.

1. Accuracy

Accuracy is one of our fundamental editorial principles.

We make reasonable efforts to ensure that information published by Indonesia Hap is accurate, relevant, and properly presented.

Before publishing an article, we seek to:

  • Verify important facts and information.

  • Use reliable and credible sources.

  • Distinguish confirmed information from allegations, claims, or speculation.

  • Provide appropriate context.

  • Avoid misleading headlines or statements.

  • Correct significant factual errors when they are identified.

We recognize that mistakes can occur. When a significant error is discovered, we aim to correct it promptly and transparently.

2. Independence

Indonesia Hap seeks to maintain editorial independence.

Our editorial decisions should not be improperly influenced by:

  • Political parties or political interests.

  • Government institutions.

  • Businesses or advertisers.

  • Personal relationships.

  • Financial interests.

  • Religious or ideological organizations.

  • Other external pressure.

Advertising, sponsorship, partnerships, or commercial relationships should not determine the editorial conclusions of our journalism.

3. Fairness and Balance

We strive to present news fairly and responsibly.

When an issue involves significant disagreement or competing perspectives, we aim to provide relevant viewpoints and appropriate context.

We do not intentionally manipulate information to promote a particular individual, organization, political interest, or commercial entity.

Being balanced does not necessarily mean giving every claim equal weight. Claims should be assessed according to available evidence, relevance, and credibility.

4. Sources

We aim to identify the sources of information used in our reporting whenever reasonably possible.

Sources may include:

  • Government institutions.

  • Official documents and statements.

  • Companies and organizations.

  • Academic and research institutions.

  • Experts and professionals.

  • Eyewitnesses.

  • Public records.

  • International organizations.

  • Other reputable news organizations.

Anonymous sources may be used when the information is important to the public interest and the source has a legitimate reason to request confidentiality.

We will not knowingly fabricate sources or quotations.

5. Verification of Information

Indonesia Hap does not consider information to be reliable simply because it is widely circulated online.

Information obtained from social media, messaging platforms, or other online sources may require additional verification before publication.

When information cannot be independently verified, we will make reasonable efforts to clearly indicate that it is unverified, disputed, or attributed to a particular source.

6. Headlines and Images

Headlines should accurately reflect the content of an article.

We avoid deliberately sensational headlines designed primarily to generate clicks when they create a misleading impression of the underlying story.

Images should also be presented honestly.

Where appropriate, we may identify:

  • File photographs.

  • Illustrative images.

  • AI-generated or digitally modified images.

  • Images obtained from third parties.

We do not intentionally manipulate images in a way that materially misrepresents a news event.

7. Corrections

We believe transparency is essential when mistakes occur.

If an article contains a significant factual error, Indonesia Hap may:

  • Correct the information.

  • Update the article.

  • Add an editor's note when appropriate.

  • Remove information that is demonstrably false or misleading.

Corrections should not be hidden when the error materially affects the meaning of the article.

Readers who identify a potential factual error are encouraged to contact us.

8. Opinion and Analysis

Indonesia Hap may publish opinion, commentary, analysis, or editorial content.

Such content should be distinguishable from straightforward news reporting.

Opinions represent the views of their authors and do not necessarily represent the position of Indonesia Hap.

Authors should make reasonable efforts to ensure that opinions and analysis are based on accurate facts.

9. Conflicts of Interest

Editors, writers, contributors, and other individuals involved in our editorial activities should avoid conflicts of interest that could compromise their independence.

Potential conflicts may include:

  • Financial relationships with subjects of coverage.

  • Personal relationships that could affect impartiality.

  • Ownership interests in companies being reported on.

  • Paid relationships with political or commercial organizations.

Where a significant conflict cannot reasonably be avoided, appropriate disclosure should be considered.

10. Advertising and Sponsored Content

Indonesia Hap may generate revenue through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate relationships, or other commercial activities.

Editorial content should remain distinguishable from paid promotional content.

Sponsored or promotional material should be identified appropriately so that readers are not misled into believing that advertising is independent editorial reporting.

Commercial relationships should not determine the factual accuracy or editorial integrity of our journalism.

11. Respect for Privacy

We respect the privacy of individuals.

We consider the public interest when deciding whether personal information should be included in a news report.

We avoid unnecessarily publishing sensitive personal information, particularly when it does not contribute meaningfully to public understanding of the story.

Public figures may reasonably receive greater scrutiny regarding matters directly related to their public responsibilities, but privacy should still be respected where appropriate.

12. Reporting on Allegations and Criminal Cases

When reporting allegations of wrongdoing, criminal investigations, or legal proceedings, we aim to clearly distinguish allegations from established facts.

Individuals should not automatically be described as guilty merely because they have been accused, investigated, arrested, or charged.

Where relevant, we seek to provide the response or position of the person or organization involved.

Legal status and terminology should be presented accurately.

13. Children and Vulnerable Individuals

Extra care should be taken when reporting about children and vulnerable individuals.

We avoid unnecessarily identifying minors involved in sensitive situations, particularly cases involving crime, abuse, exploitation, or other circumstances where publication could cause harm.

The safety and dignity of vulnerable individuals should be considered when gathering and publishing information.

14. Graphic or Sensitive Content

Indonesia Hap may report on events involving violence, disasters, accidents, conflict, crime, or other sensitive subjects.

When publishing such material, we consider:

  • Public interest.

  • Accuracy.

  • Relevance.

  • Potential harm.

  • The dignity of victims and affected individuals.

Graphic material should not be published merely for shock value or to attract clicks.

15. Artificial Intelligence and Digital Tools

Indonesia Hap may use digital tools, including artificial intelligence, to assist certain aspects of editorial and production work.

Such tools may be used for purposes such as:

  • Research assistance.

  • Translation assistance.

  • Language editing.

  • Headline brainstorming.

  • Content organization.

  • Technical or administrative tasks.

AI-generated information should not automatically be treated as fact.

Where AI is used in a way that materially affects published content, appropriate human review should be applied.

We do not intentionally publish fabricated quotations, invented sources, or false information generated by AI.

16. Plagiarism and Copyright

Indonesia Hap respects intellectual property rights.

We do not intentionally present another person's work as our own.

When using information, quotations, photographs, or other materials from third parties, we aim to respect applicable copyright and attribution requirements.

We encourage original reporting and responsible use of external sources.

17. User-Generated Content

If Indonesia Hap provides comment sections or other user-generated content features, users are responsible for the material they submit.

We do not necessarily endorse opinions expressed by users or contributors.

We may remove content that violates applicable laws, infringes intellectual property rights, contains serious misinformation, promotes harassment, or otherwise violates our community standards.

18. Respectful Journalism

Indonesia Hap aims to treat people with dignity and respect.

We do not support journalism that intentionally promotes:

  • Harassment.

  • Threats.

  • Discrimination.

  • Dehumanization.

  • Personal attacks.

  • Deliberate misinformation.

  • Incitement to violence.

Strong criticism of public institutions, policies, companies, and public figures may be appropriate journalism. However, criticism should remain grounded in facts and legitimate public interest.

19. National, Political, and Social Issues

Indonesia is a diverse country with many political, cultural, religious, ethnic, economic, and social perspectives.

When covering sensitive issues, Indonesia Hap seeks to avoid unnecessary stereotyping, inflammatory language, and misleading generalizations.

We aim to report developments based on evidence rather than assumptions.

20. Transparency

We believe readers deserve to understand how our journalism is produced.

When appropriate, we may disclose:

  • The source of important information.

  • Relevant conflicts of interest.

  • Significant corrections.

  • Sponsored relationships.

  • The use of illustrative or AI-generated material.

  • Important limitations in our reporting.

Transparency helps readers evaluate information for themselves.

21. Accountability

Indonesia Hap welcomes legitimate questions and corrections from readers.

If you believe an article contains a factual error, misleading statement, attribution problem, or other significant editorial issue, please contact us.

When reviewing a complaint, we may consider:

  • The evidence provided.

  • The original source.

  • The context of the article.

  • The seriousness of the alleged error.

  • Whether a correction or clarification is necessary.

Good-faith criticism is part of responsible journalism.

22. Our Editorial Standard

Our goal is not simply to publish more news.

Our goal is to publish useful, accurate, responsible, and meaningful information about Indonesia for readers in Indonesia and around the world.

We recognize that journalism is an ongoing process. Our standards and practices may evolve as technology, society, and the media environment change.

We are committed to continuously improving the quality and integrity of Indonesia Hap.
